The heart of any addiction—alcohol, drugs, shopping, food, working out, etc—is the avoidance of pain coupled with unwillingness to acknowledge that both the behavior and its consequences serve us even as they destroy our lives. They keep us distracted from the original pain by creating another possibly life threatening situation.
This Messy Magnificent Life
Convicted!!! If we aren’t careful we ALL can fall victim to addiction.
Over the course of the last 24 months I have become more and more aware of my shopping habits—specifically but not limited to clothes.
I still remember the countless times where my Mom would give me the credit card to offset what she wasn’t able to give me in quality time spent & emotional support. She was trying. My Gram and I went shopping every other weekend when we would spend time together too—it was a love language that they recognized in me.
Yes, rushing to the mall to get that new outfit felt good on Monday when I walked the halls of Wilson sporting the latest trends, however it didn’t last long. I didn’t recognize that anything could be overdone at the time—in fact it would be over a decade before I even paid any attention to this pattern. Consumerism is something that I have always battled. So a couple of questions I’m asking myself in 2019...
⭐️ Do I NEED or WANT this??
👎🏻 Do you NEED 10 pairs of ________? Fill in the blank.
🤦🏼♀️ What example am I setting for the girls when we get multiple packages per week?
This is yet another blessing that is coming from raising little people and recognizing and healing my inner child.
So I’m committing to not purchasing anything that isn’t out of pure necessity in 2019. We have some serious financial goals to payoff our house in the next ten years—PLUS redirecting our funds will help us get there even faster. I love multitasking!!!
The question here is the “why”—why are you buying that!? Is purchasing that thing contributing to your short or long term goals? This isn’t about restricting, rather looking past instant gratification and making choices that are going to feel good for the majority of the time—not just a quick high.
There isn’t anything wrong with purchasing a coat if the one that you already have is worn out, but if you just WANT another style or get a different color of coat you already have in 2 other colors—that’s the behavior I am talking about and addressing with myself.
Is this resonating with you!? Is there anything you NEED a little less of in 2019??
